At 212, generosity is a core value—and a tradition. Every winter, each employee receives a Christmas bonus that is earmarked for a greater purpose: charity. Our blog will highlight the local non-profits that each teammate has chosen and share why they are important to us and our community.
This year, CMO David Phelps has decided to give to Boomerang Backpacks. For more than 10 years, this organization has been providing healthy meals to students in northeast Indiana who are food-insecure.
The mission of Boomerang Backpacks is to nourish low-income elementary students on weekends by providing bags full of food for free and to inspire high school students to experience community service through project-based learning and student internships.
“Boomerang Backpacks has been on the leading edge of helping families make it through the tough economic times our state is dealing with,” says David. “Seeing our neighbors in need, Boomerang jumped to action and through various partnerships and grants provides thousands of meals to those in need.”
The non-profit addresses the needs of children living at or near poverty levels, children who haven’t experienced success in traditional school environments, and low-functioning children enrolled in special-needs life skills programs.
“Boomerang Backpacks currently supports 49 schools and more than 3,700 students in northeast Indiana,” explains David. “They serve many schools in our local community, like Jefferson, Leesburg, Harrison, Madison, and Claypool Elementary Schools.”
