Google Drive

By now, Google should be a household name in your home. It may not be your favorite search engine, Chrome may not be your browser of choice, or maybe you just can’t get used to Google+, but it’s a company that makes you work hard to not be a part of.

However, many of us embrace companies that, like Google, have an array of products. Most of us at 212 Media Studios have a Gmail account, all of us have watched a YouTube video, and I’m willing to bet that the majority has used or prefers Google Maps over other mapping or GPS services.

Google Drive is one of the various products in Google’s arsenal, and if you’re not using it, I’m about to tell you why you should.

What Is It?

Before I say anything else, let me give you a quick refresher on what Google Drive is. It’s a cloud-based storage product that collaborates with Microsoft Office, and provides similar programs. Meaning, you can use it like you use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. and save your work within your Drive account rather than your hard drive. This allows you to access the documents, photos, and presentations on just about any device with an internet connection. You can also manage the files through your browser or right on your desktop. All it takes is a simple download, and you’re ready to go!

Why I Use It

Before I used Google Drive as my primary cloud storage provider, I basically racked up referrals from other cloud storage providers like Dropbox, Copy, and Box. That, however, quickly became confusing because I was trying to manage one file system in three separate clouds.

Google Drive provided me with enough storage for everything to be in one place for a very low monthly cost. They also offer 15 GB for free.

I use it for the Office-like features as well. I can start typing a document using Docs, put a spreadsheet together in Sheets, and construct a presentation using Slides.

A few other apps I use are:

  • Quickoffice (which lets you open and edit Microsoft Office files)
  • Keep
  • Forms

Not only can I create in these apps, but I can also share them with co-workers, family, and friends with a few clicks (or touches if I’m on a mobile device).

What’s New?

Recently, Google implemented a feature into Gmail that allows you to download an attachment straight into Drive. That means people on the go can access and share content with a few app downloads on their mobile devices.

Bottom Line

Don’t get me wrong—Dropbox, Copy, and Box are all great stand-alone products. But none of them have the seamless integration that Google delivers with Drive and its other cloud-based apps.
