How Many Roles Do You Have?

Man wearing many different hats

In today’s day and age, we’re constantly busy. Some of us are trying to stay busy, while others don’t have a choice. Every single day, most of us juggle many different roles.

The business world is no different. A growing number of employees have multiple responsibilities. Small businesses know this all too well. Some small business owners have to do everything by themselves or with limited staff members. How can we effectively take on these roles without being overwhelmed or burning out our entrepreneurial passion?

1. Prioritize.

It’s always good to take a step back and look at our lives to determine what is most important. If you have many roles in life and work, you probably know too well the stresses of their overlap. Research shows that this overlap can create exhaustion and burnout in people. We try to do it all, perfecting everything as much as possible. This creates stress in us, and the ones around us. However, if we prioritize our roles we can determine what is most essential and what can be held off. This helps us see the big picture of our goals, and how to manage our days— with less stress.

2. Know Your Limits.

Let’s be honest: most of us have a hard time asking for help. Maybe you don’t mind mixing your work life with your social/family life. You may enjoy being in charge of multiple roles at work—perhaps that makes you happy. There’s no doubt, though, that a time will come when you will be overwhelmed and must ask for help or—at the very least, take a break from your task(s). If you are content within your limits and can manage what is on your plate with positivity, you will be successful.

3. Focus on One Role at a Time.

Concentrate on one responsibility at a time, and give it your all. You may have 15 different roles as the owner of your company, but you can work on whichever task is at hand. This can be humbling but can also build success. For example, if you are the manager of a store and are short-staffed, you may have to step in to run the register. While ringing up customers, you can focus solely on your job as cashier, temporarily leaving behind thoughts of managerial duties, cleaning, book-balancing, etc. This lets you do your best in that role.

I don’t want you to think I’m advising against multitasking. Effective multitasking (which is actually more common in women—sorry guys) can be a great tool for making the most of your time. I am simply communicating how important it is to separate all the roles you have in order to give your best at all times. This increases productivity and morale, and leaves you with a passion to press forward and grow.
