Ten years ago, YouTube did not exist. There was no such thing as trending videos. No Harlem Shake, no Goats Screaming Like Humans, and no way to entertain yourself for endless amounts of time by clicking on suggested videos, and after three hours of mindless clicking and viewing, asking yourself, “How in the world did I get here?”

Fast forward to the year 8AY (eight years after YouTube). Video has become so available, so searchable, and so easy to access that most people carry it with them in their pockets. Take a quick peek at some YouTube stats:

  • Over 800 million users visit YouTube each month.
  • Over 4 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube.
  • 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute.
  • YouTube is localized in 53 countries and across 61 languages.
  • In 2011, YouTube had more than one trillion views, or around 140 views for every person on Earth.

I would call this successful. Not only is it successful, but it has now become the world in which we live. It has changed a culture.

The proof is in the pudding – people love video. They love to see things displayed in front of them with a “motion factor.” They love to call their friends in the room and watch it again and again and again. They love other people’s stories put to motion.

So, why doesn’t your story move? If so many people are into video, why haven’t you applied motion to your marketing strategy? Do you not have the means to make it happen? Do you fear that it is too expensive? Do you simply feel that your story just isn’t good enough?
