Overnight Success, Hard Work, and Luck

Americans love a good “rising from the ashes” success story. We can all identify with people who come from nothing—and we naturally share in their joy when they become overnight successes.

With the steady growth of YouTube stars and social media kings, our culture is more and more convinced that success really is just one opportunity away. Anyone can make it big—you just need to step out of your circumstances and take a chance.

Call me crazy, but I think this may be cause for alarm. Sure, overnight success happens—perhaps today more than before. But when did this go from a rarity to an expectation?

In the business world, we stand to lose so much when the value of hard work dwindles. Planning and prudence should never be exchanged for “dreaming big.” I’d challenge you to evaluate where you fall in this spectrum. Are your big-picture goals backed by strategies? Accomplishment doesn’t happen by chance. Luck has little to do with it. Hard work, on the other hand…

“The object of all work is production or accomplishment, and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing.”
– Thomas Edison

In case you need a refresher, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, phonograph, and more than 1,000 other patents. This guy knew his stuff. He’s also quoted saying, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

If you feel like you just can’t catch a lucky break, take a moment to backtrack. After setting your sights on an exhilarating goal, did you devise an effectual plan of action? Did you quit too soon? Often, it’s not the “dreaming big” part that causes problems, but the strategy and willingness to put in the hours of hard work to get there.

Shooting for the moon is important. Living up to your potential is key! What will it take to get your business there? What’s the next step?
