Pinterest as a Social Media Platform: What it Takes to be Successful

"Community" pinned to bulletin board

When I initially heard about Pinterest, I was a skeptic. I thought it was just another social media site and didn’t really see the purpose for signing up. But eventually, I took the plunge and created an account, just to see what all the buzz was about. I haven’t looked back since.

My name is Bethany, and I’m a Pinterest addict.

From home decor, fashion trends, helpful graphic and photography tutorials, to everything in between, I look to Pinterest for it all. Through Pinterest, I have found some of my favorite brands, tutorials, and blogs.

Now you might be asking, how does this help my business? Here are some statistics to get you started:

  • According to, in March 2012, Pinterest recorded over 2.3 billion page views and is projected to account for over 40 percent of all social media driven purchases.
  • It boasts over 70 million users since its launch in 2010.
  • ComScore reports Pinterest users spend up to ten percent more money than users from any of the other top five social media sites.
  • The website converts leads into sales faster than any other social media platform.

Got your attention? Good.

Though you cannot sell directly through it, Pinterest offers a unique platform for relevant marketing. Instead of scrolling through status updates or Tweets, viewers look through hundreds of images, or “pins.” Every pin includes a link going back to the original source, helping to generate website traffic and increase conversion rates.

Pinterest allows the user to choose how involved they want to be. Users may follow a specific board or an entire account. By creatively structuring your pin boards, you can gain the interest of viewers and expose your products and services through a new channel.

Having a product pin board is like a virtual catalog. For example, if your business is a retail store, you can pin products from your store on boards like, “Outfits for Fall,” or “Looks for Under $100.” Pinning new or popular products is an easy way to visually showcase your business. These pins will then link back to your website where the viewer can proceed to the next step in your marketing funnel.

Pinterest can also be used in conjunction with other social media sites. It has the ability to connect with Facebook, allowing new pins to be seen on your newsfeed, offering increased exposure through different channels. If using the same business email account for both, your pins can also be shared via Twitter. Adding a “Follow Me,” or “Pin It” button to your blogs, website, and video tutorials, makes it easier for viewers to pin and follow your content.

When pinning, pay attention to the images used. Understand what colors are most effective, such as reds, dark greens, or oranges. Use links and hashtags in the descriptions of each pin, and include prices. A new feature Pinterest added is the ability for users to receive email updates, letting them know when prices on items they follow have changed.

Just like any other social media marketing, it’s important to interact with your followers. Follow others and comment or like their pins. This gives them incentive to see what you’re posting. Following others also allows you to identify trends and see what your target audience is most interested in.

Involve users by creating contests, using their own accounts to promote your products. For example, have them pin their favorite products from your brand, demonstrating why they love it, and the best board wins. By doing this, you’ll generate excitement and gain increased exposure for your business.

Harnessing the power of Pinterest can help your business tap into one of the fastest growing social media marketing platforms today.

Do you have a Pinterest account? If so, what have you been pinning lately?
