The Basics of SEO

Elements of search engine optimization

Before I started working at 212 Media Studios, I only had a basic understanding of search engine optimization (SEO). In my college marketing classes, we talked about SEO and its importance, but it still seemed like a mysterious concept that no one could fully grasp or understand. I knew it had something to do with Google and search engine results. That was about it.

As I settled into my position here as a Digerati Strategist, SEO became a big part of what I did every day. The more time I spent learning about it and practicing the different techniques, the more I realized how simple SEO is. Now it is something I am passionate about, so much that I want to give you all the chance to enjoy it, too!

In this article, I’ll cover what SEO is and why it is important. Next time, I’ll talk more specifically about what you can do to improve your website’s SEO.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization is a marketing strategy designed to get a website to show up higher in search engine results. Search engines like Google and Bing scan every website on the internet, gather information about it (content, keywords, links to other websites, etc.), and use this information to categorize it in their records. These are the records that people search when using Google or Bing.

Let’s say that you Google the phrase “basic SEO strategy.” As soon as you click the “Google Search” button, Google scans its records for all the pages across the internet that are related to basic SEO strategy. It then organizes the results by order of relevance, greatest to least. And do you know how Google decides the relevance of a result? You guessed it—SEO.

For those of you who are visual learners, like me, here is a video that explains this process in more detail using visual aids:

Why Should You Care?

How does all of this affect your business? The bottom line is this: Sites that are optimized well for search engines show up higher in the results list. This means people are more likely to find those websites and learn about their companies, products, and services. In essence, SEO increases your lead generation, and you spend little to no money in the process.

You can verify this through your own experience. How often do you look beyond the first few pages of search results before you find what you’re looking for, revise your search, or just give up altogether? For most people, the answer is “very infrequently.” How incredible would it be if your website could be on the first page of search results, perhaps even among the first few links? Consider the increase in website traffic, leads, and sales for your business!
