A couple of months ago, I was tasked with designing our local high school’s gymnasium floor. Obviously, when you live in Indiana, what this really means is designing the basketball court floor. That isn’t to take anything away from volleyball, but we’re talking about basketball in Indiana.
In a meeting with the school’s Athletic Director, Matt brought up the idea of the school having brand standards. I obviously agreed, having done this numerous times with our 212 Media Studios clients.
The importance of brand standards for a high school might strike some as odd, but with the amount of shirts, shorts, jackets, and various other merchandise pieces that are printed every year, you tend to get 20 to 30 different mascot renditions. Could you imagine seeing 20 to 30 versions of the Coca-Cola or Mercedes-Benz logos? Madness!
Don’t limit your brand standards to just logos and colors either. They say that it takes a village to raise a child. You can say the same when it comes to brand standards—because it takes designers, copywriters, and marketing specialists to design your logo, write your content, and run your entire marketing strategy, including social media. In our new eBook Expand Your Brand (see below) we define brand with the equation Story + Marketing + Reputation = Brand. It’s much more than just a logo.
Besides, people can steal and change logos, but nobody can steal your brand.
